Subtitling

If you need translation of video or audio content, you can rely on VERBA’s experts with years of professional experience.

OUR CLIENTS

What Is Subtitling?

Subtitling is a type of audiovisual translation that involves converting spoken dialogue into written text displayed on screen. It’s a highly specialised process that bridges language and cultural gaps, giving wider audiences access to audiovisual content. Subtitles also increase the online visibility of business audiovisual content, improve viewer understanding, and make the content more accessible to people with hearing impairments.

Types of Subtitling

At VERBA, subtitling is handled by creative, specialised linguists who work within spatial and time constraints while maintaining the original meaning, style and tone—ensuring a smooth and engaging viewing experience.

Subtitling for Streaming Platforms

When translating subtitles for films, series or other entertainment content, the goal is to convey what the characters are saying—often concisely—while maintaining the original style and tone and without distracting from the viewing experience. Translators must have excellent command of both source and target languages and apply a range of translation strategies to accurately reflect the linguistic and cultural nuances of the original material.

Subtitling for Business Purposes

Subtitling for business purposes includes translations of video content for business presentations, training materials, webinars and internal purposes. Our translators ensure a precise translation that retains a professional tone and complies with industry standards—making your content clear and accessible to wider audiences.

Subtitling for Social Media

Subtitling for social media helps ensure your video content is understandable and appealing to audiences around the world. Whether it’s promotional videos, campaigns or engagement-focused content, our translators adapt the language and style to match your brand tone and platform expectations. Social media subtitles also boost reach and engagement by enabling viewers to follow content without sound.

Subtitles for the Gaming Industry

Subtitling for video games requires deep understanding of gaming terminology and culture. Our team specialises in subtitling video games—making gameplay accessible and immersive for global audiences thanks to authentic, localised translations. From character dialogue to in-game instructions, our subtitles preserve the original tone and atmosphere while ensuring clarity and localisation accuracy.

Techniques and Tools for Film Subtitling

Nowadays there are many tools and techniques available for subtitling films. At VERBA, we select the most suitable approach in consultation with each client, based on project requirements. Thanks to advancements in technology, there are now subtitling tools that support automatic transcription, time-coding, and even machine translation of subtitles.

While these tools can streamline parts of the workflow, our experienced translators, editors, and proofreaders ensure the final product meets the highest quality standards.

Subtitle Formatting and Synchronisation

Subtitles can be delivered in a range of file formats (.stl, .srt, .vtt, .pac, .sub, etc.), and are formatted according to client specifications and standard linguistic and technical guidelines for audiovisual translation. All subtitles are time-coded (synchronised) to match on-screen dialogue.

.stl
Språk Text List – a file format used for subtitles in films and TV shows. It contains subtitle text along with time codes indicating when subtitles appear and disappear on screen.
.srt
SubRip Subtitle – one of the most widely used subtitle formats. It includes simple text with time codes indicating the start and end of a subtitle and is compatible with a wide range of apps and devices.
.vtt
WebVTT (Web Video Text Tracks) – a format for subtitles and text cues, most often used for online video content. In addition to basic subtitles, it can include descriptions of sound effects and speech.
.sub
SUB – a subtitle format that contains text information and timecodes and can be used in combination with various video file types.
.pac
PAC (Pixel-based Subtitle) – a format that displays subtitles graphically using pixels, typically used in applications and devices that support image-based subtitle rendering.
